One of my employees has just approached me and said that she needs accommodations because of her disability. What should I do?

Please refer the employee to the Accommodations Procedures page so that he or she may download the appropriate Request for Accommodations form, depending on where he or she works.

One of my students has informed me that he has a learning disability and will need testing accommodations. What should I do?

Student Disability Access Office (SDAO) works closely with deans, staff, and faculty members in determining necessary reasonable classroom accommodations and implementation. Faculty members are encouraged to inform all students of the need to register with the Student Disability Access Office in order to seek consideration for reasonable

Our office is developing a new brochure. How do we ensure that it is accessible to individuals with low vision?

When developing/designing the brochure, be sure to save it in a text-only version prior to converting it to any desktop publishing software format. Include a statement on the brochure, or any printed material, about Alternative Formats PDF icon for receiving the information. Then, if you receive requests from individuals, obtain their font requirements and apply that font to the text-only version of your brochure. My son has a learning disability and would like to attend Duke after graduation from high school. Who should I talk with to learn about services available?

Prospective undergraduate and graduate students and their families are encouraged to visit the Student Disability Access Office (SDAO) for up-to-date documentation criteria, procedures and as well as additional supportive services available.

My mother who is deaf is scheduled for surgery at Duke Hospital. Who should I talk with about her special needs?

Patients and their visitors may contact the Patient Relations Program at 919-681-2020 for services including sign language interpreters.

My daughter is graduating from Duke this spring. Her grandmother would like to attend the commencement ceremonies but will need a wheelchair to get around. Will the University have one available for her?

Wheelchair rental is available through local vendors. The list of Durham Resources contains information on wheelchair rental, as well as lists of vendors for other special needs of individuals with disabilities.

I am a new subscriber to the Artist’s Series and need to know the locations of accessible parking when I attend performances in Page Auditorium and the Nelson Music Room. Where can I go to get this information?

The online Accessibility Maps illustrate the current view of accessible paths of travel to individual buildings, parking, accessible entrances and more. The maps are continually updated to reflect on-going improvements to the academic, medical and research environment at Duke.

We are currently working with one of the University’s Project Managers and an external architectural firm to begin discussions about an addition to our building. What should I be doing to ensure the new addition is accessible to individuals with disabilities?
