ACCESSIBLE PARA-TRANSIT
684-2218

The Duke University Para-Transit service is dedicated to providing transportation to students, faculty, and staff who have either long- or short-term disabilities that limit their ability to move about the University campus.

Scheduling

Fixed Appointments
Students who wish para-transit service to class on a regular basis must provide a written copy of their request to the Transportation Operation Manager’s Office at least two weeks prior to the start of the semester.

Other Scheduling
Other para-transit service may be scheduled as follows:
For service between 7:30am -5:00pm, call 684-2218.
For service after 5:00pm call 684-7233 (684-SAFE).
Service will be provided on first come, first served basis. As such, requests for service should be made at least two hours in advance.

Canceling a Reservation
If you must cancel a reservation, please contact the transit office at 684-2218. Riders who repeatedly miss pick-up appointments without contacting the transit office may be subject to official action.

Service

Service Provision
Service is provided “curb to curb.” Passengers must meet the van curbside during the day and when notified that the van has arrived at night. Drivers may not carry passengers’ personal items nor assist passengers in/out of buildings or up/down stairs. Personal attendants or companions are allowed to accompany the passenger in order to fulfill these roles.

Transit Boundaries
Duke transit will provide complimentary para-transit service within 3/4 of a mile of its fixed route campus service. No service will be provided outside of this area. During the 684-SAFE service periods (12:00 am - 7:00 am), transit will only be provided within the boundaries stipulated under the 684-SAFE program. Please see the 684-SAFE guidelines for more information on those services. All 684-SAFE policies are in effect with one exception. Riders identified as disabled will have an extended time to meet the van, five minutes rather than two minutes.

Other Information

Response Time
Response time to a particular request will vary depending upon the number of other passengers who have requested service. Consequently, in order to assure timely service, please notify the transit office well in advance if you need service for a special event or at a time when other riders may also be requesting the service (e.g., basketball game).

Further Assistance
If you need assistance and are unable to reach the transit office, please call Public Safety at 684-2444.
